The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has decried the deluge of fake news “distracting” the Federal Government in the fight against COVID-19 across the country. Speaking during a briefing on Monday by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mohammed lamented that there are people who keep distracting the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in curtailing coronavirus. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who formally stepped down as senior members of the British royal family last week, told the Daily Telegraph newspaper they were establishing the organisation in the United States, where they are now based. The charitable organisation will include emotional support groups, a multimedia educational empire and a wellbeing website among other things. COVID-19: US Records 1,150 Deaths In 24 hours – Johns Hopkins

The US recorded 1,150 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours, Johns Hopkins University said late Monday, pushing the country’s toll further above the 10,000 mark reached earlier in the day. According to Johns Hopkins’ running tally, there are more than 366,000 cases of new coronavirus in the United States — including in excess of 30,000 new cases in 24 hours — with total deaths at 10,783. The US has by far the most number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world. The number of deaths recorded since the start of the pandemic has for the past several days increased by at least 1,000 per day and is gradually approaching the number of deaths in Italy (16,523) and Spain (13,005).

The UN’s health agency along with partners Nursing Now and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) underscored in a report the crucial role played by nurses, who make up more than half of all health workers worldwide. “Nurses are the backbone of any health system,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. “Today, many nurses find themselves on the frontline in the battle against COVID-19,” he noted, adding that it was vital they “get the support they need to keep the world healthy.” The report said that there are just under 28 million nurses on the planet. China on Tuesday reported no new coronavirus deaths for the first time since it started publishing figures in January, the National Health Commission said. Cases in mainland China have been dwindling since March, but the country faces a second wave of infections brought in from overseas, with health officials reporting nearly 1,000 imported cases in total. China’s health authorities reported 32 new cases nationwide, all of which were imported. There were also 30 new asymptomatic infections, health officials said, bringing the national total to 1,033. Around a quarter of the current total of asymptomatic cases were also imported from overseas. Taraba is a state in Nigeria’s North-East region. The Paramount ruler of Yandang Chiefdom, Haniel Banti, has escaped an attack by armed men in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba state. Confirming the incident to Channels Television, the monarch says it happened at about 1:10 am on Sunday, few hours after he hosted a peace meeting with the warring tribes of his chiefdom that has led to the displacement of thousands. Cardinal Pell Freed After Winning Appeal Over Child Sex Abuse

Cardinal George Pell was released from prison Tuesday, hours after Australia’s High Court quashed his conviction for child sex abuse, bringing to an abrupt end the most high-profile paedophilia case faced by the Catholic Church. The 78-year-old left Barwon Prison near Melbourne after the court overturned five counts of sexually abusing two 13-year-old choirboys in the 1990s. Pell, who had steadfastly maintained his innocence throughout a lengthy court process, left the jail where he has been held for the last year and issued a statement saying that a “serious injustice” had been remedied by the decision. A jury convicted Pell in December 2018, and that decision was upheld by a three-judge panel in Victoria state’s Court of Appeal last August in a split verdict. But Australia’s High Court found there was “a significant possibility that an innocent person has been convicted because the evidence did not establish guilt to the requisite standard of proof”.
